Hoffmann's voice and the songs - sung by herbal researcher Jim Duke - are great fun. They are a good way to lighten up herbal study and to also encourage people who are just becoming interested in herbs and the 'herbal community. This CD offers a sense of adventure to the professional herbalist, the herb students and anyone just casually interested in finding out more about herbs. (Wayne Hoyle, American Herb Association, Vol 12:1 1996)
Herb's (The Herbalist CD-ROM) walk through the herb garden with the author is a pleasant, charming, and educational experience. The depth and breadth of information on the disk is noteworthy. This is a system you'll want to explore in detail, not just with quick lookups, because of its considerable serendipity potential. (Cheryl LaGuardia, Library Journal Jan 95)
The most vivid program offering is its Herbal Materia Medica, which explains the habitat, constituents, actions, indications, preparation and dosage of individual herbs. When you click on an herb's name, the program features a detailed discussion and a photo, which can be enlarged to fill the screen with a click. Some of the herbs are accompanied by soundtracks. (Barbara Feiner, Emergency Medical Services Nov 95)
The Herbalist reference disk is seemingly endless, with thousands of topics ranging from arthritis to zinc. (Coaster Magazine Aug 95)
You will agree this is a well done program when you see it. I enjoyed browsing through the very professionally done screens and reading about the effects of various herbs on the many conditions of the body part, system or condition. (J. Woody Stovall, The Wilson World, Aug 3, 1994)
The Herbalist is an encyclopedic CD that brings together information - some of it greatly revised and expanded - from several of his [David Hoffmann's] books, along with new and often entertaining material. This is not just a list of herbs and their medicinal uses, although it could be used that way. Rather, it's an exhaustive treatment of holistic herbal healing as taught and practiced by Hoffmann. (Dave Merrill, The Herb Companion, Aug/Sept 94).
The text of this program is easy to follow, very informative and gives appropriate warnings regarding the use of herbal preparations. The songs and narration are enjoyable, and the digitized color photography is a great way to visualize herbs and plants. (Brian Gugerty MS, RN & Kathleen M. Bartley RPA-C, Computers In Nursing, Aug 94))
If you're looking for an electronic course in herbal therapy, its philosophical underpinnings, tips on herb preparation, and most important, which herbs treat what ailments, this is it. (Greg Keizer, Computer Life Oct 94)
If you're interested in natural health, you'll find The Herbalist a particularly useful reference. -- New Age Journal, Nov/Dec 94
