The phrase “drowning in data” might take on a whole new meaning thanks to underwater data centers from Microsoft.
The tech giant is conducting extensive research on the central coast of California to see if it’s possible to harness the power of the ocean to help keep data centers cool at a lower cost.
While water and technology don’t usually mix, Microsoft researchers believe they’ve found a safe way to combine the two off Avila Beach’s Cal Poly Pier. This beach, which has no public access, is a center for electrical marine research.
Microsoft researchers have tested whether they can place computer equipment in a 38,000-pound container and sink it into the cool depths to counterbalance the often-high temperatures that come along with high-powered servers.
Whether this proves an efficient and effective method remains to be seen. But for now, anchors away!
